Cops to protect Godhra victims

For the Godhra victims and witnesses who are expected to depose in various cases in courts, the Gujarat police has assured protection. This comes after the intervention of the NHRC.

Last month, the Commission had asked the Gujarat police to submit a report on steps taken to protect ‘‘the safety, physical, psychological well-being, dignity and privacy’’ of victims and witnesses who are required to depose before the court of the Justice Nanavati Commission, which is probing the Godhra and post-Godhra violence.

In a report submitted to the NHRC, the Gujarat police chief claimed that the SPs all over the state have been instructed to extend protection to all those asking for it. The police chief’s report was discussed by the panel at a meeting held on Monday.
