Even Mayawati perhaps doesn’t have this touching faith in her ability to dislodge the Mulayam Singh Yadav government. A constable is believed to have shot at a colleague here today after a drunken brawl over whether the BSP chief had it in her to become the new chief minister. The incident happened around noon at Lucknow Police Lines. The constable supporting Mayawati, Ram Chandra Gautam, allegedly shot the constable backing Mulayam, Ram Awadh Yadav, in the waist with his .303 service rifle, saying: ‘‘ Mulayam ki sarkar rahegi to yeh le.goli kha.’’ Yadav is struggling for life at King George Medical University. Gautam, who fled the scene with his rifle, has been suspended and booked on charges of attempt to murder.Eyewitnesses say the two had entered into an argument over the prevailing political scenario in the state. ‘‘Gautam is a Dalit and a Mayawati loyalist and used to abuse the Samajwadi Party government a lot after drinking. Yadav swore by Mulayam’s rule. They had been at each other’s throats for many months now. Earlier Yadav had beaten up Gautam on the same issue,’’ said a constable who also witnessed the incident.Today’s incident started when Gautam said that Mulayam’s government was about to go after Mayawati’s agitation on BSP MLA Raju Pal’s murder.
