J-K police poured water on the Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami’s plans to disrupt the Amarnath pilgrimage after it picked up four HUJI militants, including their commander for J-K, Mohammad Amin aka Abu Khalid, last night.

The militants were travelling in a truck (JK-03-0496) loaded with tiles from Delhi, which was stopped at Lakhanpur on the Pathankot-Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, SP Mukesh Sinha said.

JKLF warns of more
attacks like Sunjwan

Islamabad: PAKISTAN-based Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front warned today that there would be more attacks like the one on the Sunjwan Army camp until Kashmiris were allowed self-determination.
‘‘These kinds of attacks will continue to occur until both countries seriously make moves to resolve the problem of Kashmir,’’ JKLF leader S.M. Afzal said.
‘‘India now should start thinking that the Kashmir issue must be resolved according to the wishes of the Kashmiri people,’’ he said, referring to demands by Pakistan and militants that the people of the region choose how they are ruled in a plebiscite. In the deadliest attack in Kashmir since Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee’s peace offer to Pakistan, militants stormed the Sunjwan camp outside Jammu early on Saturday, killing 12 soldiers. AFP

He said that Amin was a resident of Bankoot in Doda district, while his associates Shabir Ahmed and Abdul Hamid were from Qazigund and Farooq Ahmed was from Boonjwan (Kishtwar).

Police seized Rs 8.5 lakh from them, besides a pistol, two hand grenades, one mobile phone and some incriminating documents. They were carrying photo identity cards issued by local revenue officials, sources said.

Nazir was in possession of two identity cards — one showing him as Nazir Ahmed of Banihal and another pronouncing him as a resident of Anantnag. Sources said he appears to have replaced the original photo on the identity cards with his. Sources said the HUJI commander had gone to Delhi to collect money from a contact who met them at Sanjay Nagar. But he got the money only after three to four meetings and he left for the Valley on Saturday with his associates in the truck, they added.

The sources added the militants were badly in need of money following the military operations at Hill Kaka in Poonch. Amin, who was active in Doda and Shopian areas, had fled Hill Kaka during Operation Sarp Vinash.
