SURAT, SEPT 7: A city police team today brought back four kidnappers of a city-based weaving master, who were arrested from Bihar last week. While Harendrasinh Mahida, who was kidnapped and taken to Bihar by the gang, has been re-united with his family, the police produced the four kidnappers before a magistrate on Tuesday evening and asked for a remand.

Omprakash Raghunath Prasad of Begumpura village near Patna, Vijay Kumar alias Vijay Singh Chandreshwar Singh, Virendra Kedarnath Mandal both of Patna in Bihar, and Ranjit alias Kumar Shivendra Singh of Gaya district of Bihar, were brought to the city on Tuesday morning on the basis of a transit warrant by a team of city police led by ACP I C Ray and DCB PSI8217;s R H Hadiya and B D Deasi. The gang leader, Pappu Singh alias Kunwar Arvind Singh, is however absconding.

Mahida was kidnapped from the city on August 5 while he was travelling in his maroon Maruti Esteem GJ 5 FF 8003 and taken straight to Bihar via Nagpur. The kidnappers made a demand of Rs 50 lakhs initially, but then settled for Rs 40 lakhs.

In the meantime, the police traced the kidnappers through calls made by them, and positioned cops at all telephone exchanges connecting Patna to Surat. In a well-executed operation carried out between August 28 and September 1, the city police and the local Bihar police managed to rescue Mahida and make four arrests.

According to top police officials, the primary objective of escorting the four kidnappers back to the city is to find out what local connection they had.

None of the four have worked in the city, so it is only with the help of some local connections that they would have kidnapped Mahida.

Addl CP H P Singh stated on Tuesday evening that intensive interrogation of the four will begin from tomorrow and details will be available thereafter.
