Opener Alastair Cook scored 80 to guide England to a five-wicket win and their first one-day series victory in Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

A lacklustre display by Sri Lanka’s top order meant they were restricted to a modest 211-9 after winning the toss and England surpassed this with 19 balls remaining. It was England’s first series win on the sub-continent since 1987. England have an unassailable 3-1 lead with one match remaining. Though Lasith Malinga captured two wickets in his second spell, Kevin Pietersen remained unbeaten on 63 to take England home with 3.1 overs to spare.

Earlier, Kumar Sangakkara and Chamara Silva’s fighting half centuries and a valuable 126-run stand for the fourth wicket rescued Sri Lanka from an early collapse.

But their top-order failed to rise to the occasion with a series of low scores faced with aggressive English bowling. Paceman Ryan Sidebottom broke through with the total at seven dismissing Upul Tharanga for four runs caught by Owais Shah at slip.
