HYDERABAD, APRIL 1: Congress MLA Sivarami Reddy tendered an unconditional apology to the Assembly on Saturday for bringing a bottle of liquor into the House.
While the House was discussing a bill on an amendment to the Prohibition Act, the Congress MLA sprang a surprise by producing the bottle saying that the liquor bottled by a reputed company contained fungus.
Amidst protests by ruling party members, Chief Whip Kagita Venkat Rao said that without the permission of the Speaker, no member can bring any such exhibits into the House.
Opposition leader Y S Rajasekhar Reddy said that the intention was only to bring it to the notice of the House that manufacturers were dumping unhygienic liquor in the people. Some remarks made by Rajasekhar Reddy in the context of withdrawing prohibition irked TDP members but nothing could be heard with both Congress and TDP members shouting at each other.
Deputy Speaker K Chandrasekhar Rao, who was in the Chair, was able to restore normalcy with great difficulty.
Later, MIM members staged a walkout protesting Sivarami’s Reddy’s conduct. BJP leader N Indrasena Reddy condemned the action while CPM leader N Narsimhaiah suggested that the member should apologise.
With both ruling and Opposition parties, barring Congress, demanding an apology, Sivarami Reddy said, "I did not know that I should not bring such things. My intention was to bring the facts to the notice of the House and I apologise for my mistake."
When the ruling party members tried to insist on action against him, the Deputy Speaker advised that the matter be dropped as Sivarami Reddy had apologised.
