The Congress today said that its councillors were not involved in intimidating witnesses in the Best Bakery case.
Reporting on the witnesses who had turned hostile, The Indian Express had said that they were being intimidated by BJP MLA Madhu Shrivastva and his cousin, a Congress councillor Chandrakant Batthu.
A report from the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee on Batthu would be submitted to party president Sonia Gandhi soon.
GPCC chief Shankersinh Vaghela said: ‘‘Batthu was among those who had lodged the first complaint with police on the Best Bakery case. We had asked him to give the facts and file a report which he has. It will now be submitted to the party president.’’
According to the report, Batthu alleges that his name was dragged into the issue of intimidation of witnesses. ‘‘Those who have perpetrated the crime are deliberately naming Batthu. Because he was the one who protected the members of the minority community during the riots,’’ Vaghela said.
