NAGPUR, Dec 9: Senior Congress leader and former Union minister, Vilasrao Muttemwar, former Maharashtra minister, Satish Chaturvedi, senior trade union leader, S Q Zama and Rajya Sabha member Dr Shrikant Jichkar are among the prominent Congress leaders lobbying for a party ticket from the Nagpur-Kamptee parliamentary seat for the forthcoming mid-term polls.

Muttemwar, who represented the neighbouring Chimur Parliamentary constituency thrice, now wants to contest from Nagpur as Chimur seat is likely to go to the RPI in the possible Congress-RPI alliance in the ensuing elections. Muttemwar had lost the seat to the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 1996 Lok Sabha elections.

He was hopeful for being given party’s ticket from Nagpur following their proximity to two Congress Working Committee (CWC) members — Tariq Anwar and Madhavrao Scindia — who are also general secretaries of the party and are reportedly in favour of his candidature from Nagpur.

On the other hand, Congress legislator Satish Chaturvedi, is pinning his hopes on party chief, Sitaram Kesri, with whom he has succeeded in establishing a good rapport in the recent past. Besides, the city Congress committee which is dominated by Chaturvedi faction would support him for the nomination. Nagpur City Congress president, Kishore Kashikar recently made it clear that only Chaturvedi can wrest the seat from BJP in Nagpur. “If party gives ticket to him (Chaturvedi), he will certainly create an atmosphere in party’s favour,”the city Congress chief asserted. Chaturvedi is also hopeful that he will manage the ticket even at the eleventh hour.

Dr Jichkar, whose Rajya Sabha tenure is ending in a couple of months, is also a contender for the party ticket, P V Narasimha Rao is likely to recommend his nomination. Jichkar’s supporters claim that he has an equal rapport with party chief Sitaram Kesri.
