This week has it all. A glimpse into the Korean cinema of the 1990s is afforded through a festival starting on Monday. Vocalist Lata Godse and sitar exponent Sudhir Phadke perform together in a concert organised by Gaanvardhan. Art buffs get a range of water colours by Wadangekar and traditional paintings by Radhikadevi Patwardhan. Jean-Paul Sartre’s French Classic No Exit will be staged in Hindi at the IUCAA auditorium.
Alliance Francaise de Poona: Les Creatures (1966/ B&W/ 90 min). Directed by Agnes Varda, the cast includes Michel Picoli, Catherine Deneuve, Eva Dalhbeck and Britta Peterson. Edgar, a detective novel writer is on the island of Noirmoutier with his pregnant wife Mylene who is mute after a car accident. He is writing a new novel while living among the inhabitants of the island. The proprietor of a hotel, a doctor, a grocer, an old sailor…But the vision he has is transformed by his imagination. His child is born, he finishes his novel, Mylene recovers the faculty of speech…At 6 p.m. on Sunday.
National Film Archive of India: Songadya (Marathi/ 1971/ B&W/ 143 min). Directed by Govind Kulkarni, the cast includes Usha Chavan, Dada Kondke, Ratnamala, Nilu Phule, Ganpat Patil, Gulab Mokashi and Sampat Nikam.
The innocent Namya son of the tough Shitabai, is taken by his friends to see a tamasha performance. He gets so excited by a particular scene from the Mahabharata that he jumps on to the stage disrupting the show. He follows the troupe to the next village and is invited to become the understudy for one of the roles. Comedian Kondke’s first independent production, which also inaugurated his particular style. This tamasha-derived ribald comedy has a bumbling hero, an energetic heroine and dialogues that are replete with sexual innuendo. Among the several popular songs is the duet Malyachya malya madhi kon ga ubhi. At 6.30 p.m. on Saturday. For members only.
National Centre of Films for Children and Young People: Jawab Aayega (The Reply) 1968/ Hindi/ 81 mins. Directed by Ismat Chugtai and Shahid Latif, the cast includes Yogita Bali, Chand Usmani, Meena Roy and Irshad.
An executive engineer goes on a holiday with his two daughters to a remote hill station. The younger one, Meena gives lessons on reading and writing to Badal, the house-keeper’s son. The boy also learns to paint. The children become good friends and roam the hills together with their large pet dog. The family return to the big city. Badal is very disappointed at not hearing from Meena. He puts his book of paintings in a box addressed to Meena and sets it afloat. It gets picked up a long distance away, and finally is delivered to Meena in her school. She wins a prize thanks to these paintings, but confesses that the paintings are not by her – they are by Badal. Badal’s cherished dream comes true. He is invited to visit the city. Korean Film Festival: Aashay Film Club, NFAI and FTII have organised a Korean Film Festival presented by Korea Foundation and Consulate General Republic of Korea.

One man show: An exhibition of paintings by distinguished artist and gold medalist Ganapatrao Wadangekar will be organised by the Kala Pradarshan Samiti. The paintings, done in water colours displayed are collected from private collections and are not for sale. The purpose of this exhibition is to inspire young artists with his work, his life, his simplicity, his modesty, his thoughts, his way of thinking and his composition. Traditional paintings: An exhibition-cum-sale of the paintings of Radhikadevi Patwardhan. Paintings on various traditional themes in a variety of styles will be on display. At the Shyam Ahuja showroom under the aegis of the Nag Foundation, an organisation that engages in the promotion of art. On for the entire month of September.
Arangetram: Sheryl Koshy, student of Guru Soudamini Rao, will perform her Bharatnatyam Arangetram at St Joseph’s High School Hall, Pashan, at 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Flowers and plants: The organisation `Hirawal,’ an association of past students of nursery development and garden maintenance course have arranged an exhibition of Dahlia and seasonals. Different types of flowers like Jarabera, Gladiolus, Aster, Carnation, Anthurthium will be arranged. Garden plants, bulbs of different seasonals and equipment will be on sale.
