PUNE, April 16: The Pune Municipal Corporation has initiated the process of implementing of hospital waste management in all its 14 hospitals in the city. Besides, plans are on the anvil to extend the same to all the private hospitals.
A decision to this effect was taken during a meeting of medical officers of the corporation-run hospitals convened by Additional Municipal Commissioner Deepak Kapoor on April 15.
In the meeting, the medical officers were directed to ensure that syringes, needles and blades used in wards and out-patient-departments (OPD) in each hospital should be cut and then collected in blue-coloured puncture-proof container. The waste thus collected should be disposed off fortnightly in an incinerator.
To facilitate the disposal off their waste properly, the hospitals will be provided with small standard containers in a week’s time, said a press note issued by Kapoor. Ward nurses and medical officers in the hospital have been assigned the responsibility of this job. A complete record of disposal of waste will also be kept at every hospital.
The hospitals have been further instructed to collect the cotton dressings and contaminated cotton material in yellow bags and later send it for incineration on a daily basis. Similarly, human tissues and organs will be disposed off in yellow-coloured bags and conveyed to incinerators for disposal in special vehicles.
Expired drugs will be gathered in black-coloured bags and carried in special vehicles for disposal to the incinerator, the note said. The communique further added that the respective medical officers and the deans of the hospitals have been given the authority to carry out the purchases of coloured bags for disposal of hospital waste.
