MUMBAI, MAY 15: Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Pradesh Congress Committee president Govindrao Adik will meet Governor P C Alexander on Tuesday to protest against the anti-farmer and anti-people policies of the Atal Behari Vajpayee-led National Democratic Alliance.

“Ever since the installation of the NDA government at the Centre, it had taken anti-people decisions. To protest against the indifferent attitude of the Centre, we will submit a memorandum to the Governor. Even in New Delhi, Congress President Sonia Gandhi will call on President K R Narayanan for the same purpose,” Adik said.

In a move to revive the crisis-ridden organisation, Adik has launched a state-wide Nirdhar Yatra, which he started from Nasik on May 6. “So far I have covered 14 districts in North Maharashtra and Vidarbha. The response is overwhelming and people from all walks of life are keen to join the Congress under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi,” Adik said.

Adik came down heavily on the Centre, not only for drastically cutting the subsidies, but also for setting up a highlevel panel to review the constitution. “The Centre is taking such steps for obvious political reasons. Though there is no provision in the constitution, the Centre has taken the decision to review it. It was an illegal decision and we will oppose it on all platforms,” he said.

Adik, an arch political rival of Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar, made it clear that in the days to come, the Congress will be in a position to form the government on its own. At the moment, the Congress has alliance with the NCP in the Congress-led Democratic Front government.
