NEW DELHI, JULY 27: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued show-cause notices to the Delhi government and the Delhi Police on a plea by the roadside vendors of the capital seeking compensation for loss of earnings during the visit of US President Bill Clinton in March this year.

NHRC sources today said the government and the police department have been directed to put their response to the petition filed by the Rehri-Patri Khomcha Union — a forum representing the vendors — by August 29.

The Union, in its petition before the NHRC, claimed that about 50 vendors of the Ajmeri Gate area of central Delhi were removed by police in the first week of March and were not allowed to do their business till the end of the month due to Clinton’s impending visit.

The decision to remove the vendors from the locality was taken by the Delhi police for security concerns relating to the US President, who arrived in the capital on march 20 and stayed on till March 23. Their displacement from their place of work between March 1 to March 28 resulted in a loss of approximately Rs 4,500 to each one of them, Union’s counsel Ashok Aggarwal stated in the petition and sought directions to the Delhi Police and the government to pay adequate compensation to these vendors for the loss of their earnings.

Holding Police and government responsible for the misery, the petition urged action against them in accordance with law for violation of their human rights.
