8226; Shekhar Gupta is right in his assertion that Pakistan needs to be 8216;civilianised8217; 8216;Pakistan8217;s civilian deal8217;. Since its creation, no elected government has ever completed its term. At no time was its political leadership considered efficient or reliable enough to be trusted with the supreme national interests by the military. It remains to be seen whether General Kiyani keeps his commitment to democracy even when the PPP-PMLN coalition has failed to deliver. The fallout of Pakistan8217;s politics may also affect India in the long run.

Kashmir in India
8226; Jaithirth Rao8217;s article, 8216;India won8217;t, can8217;t give up8217; is an extremely well thought-out piece of writing. I wonder how sentimental and foolish we people of Kashmir can be. We have to live with India 8212; it has so much to offer, a sparkling future, the best of educational infrastructure and a booming economy. We should stop wasting our time and live within India in peace.

8226; The article, 8216;India won8217;t, can8217;t give up8217; by Jaithirth Rao is very informative. The bias because of which India was partitioned, with Muslim-majority areas going to Pakistan in 1947, was deliberately not applied to J038;K, and other such states ruled by maharajas which were given the option to join either country. The current dispute must be resolved by negotiations between both countries or with mediation. With the demise of the Soviet Union we have no need for Kashmir Valley, without which now there would be no threat to the unity and integrity of India.

Pak8217;s peril
8226; This refers to Murtaza Razvi8217;s 8216;Pakistan People8217;s Peril8217;. Pakistan has never been able to shake off the grip of its feudal coterie spread across the political spectrum. They behave like zamindars of yore, brooking no opposition, and hold little respect for institutions such as parliament, the press, and the judiciary. Till Pakistan is fortunate enough to find a disinterested leader to unify and democratise it, the sub-continent will continue to simmer as the Army utilises the interregnum to freely pursue its time-tested anti-Indian manoeuvres.
