Advocate Koover C Vajifdar (78), an authority on the Rent Act, passed away after a brief illness at the Breach Candy Hospital on Sunday.Vajifdar was a internationally renowned personality in the legal field for the last 40 years.

He had written several books on the subject, and had been a regular contributor to various newspapers and magazines. He was a staunch supporter of the Maharashtra Rent Control Bill 1993, which will soon to become an Act.

Seminar on UCG

Maharashtra Congress Seva Dal president Chandrakant Dayama appointed Lalit Kale as the vice-president and Dilip Thanekar, Ashok Shandeliya and Peer Saheb Inamdar as organisation secretaries.

DPC conference

The Dabhol Power Company (DPC) is holding a pre-bid conference for its plant and machinery for the second phase of the Dabhol power project. The Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) chairperson P L Gajarlwar and Technical Director P S Pavanikar will attend the conference, to be held at Houston in the USA. A press release issued by the MSEB stated that its participation was necessary because the DPC had agreed to give a concession in its power tariff if competitive bidding was less than estimated.

Residents on fast

The residents of the Bishnu Nagar Society at Chembur have decided to go on a fast-until-death from 9 am on August 26 opposite the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited’s main gate at Corridor Road, Chembur to protest the lack of drinking water in their area.The protest will be held under the leadership of Congress leader T N Shukla. Municipal Councillor Rajendra Mahulkar and several other Congress and RPI leaders have consented to be present on the occasion.
