CIS countries will set up a Central Asian branch of the CIS anti-terrorist centre, in Bishkek, the Kyrgyz capital. ‘‘We took a decision to establish a Central Asian branch of the CIS anti-terrorist centre,’’ Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday at a press conference, in Chisinau, capital of Moldova, after the summit of heads of state of CIS countries.

‘‘This is one of the measures to counteract dangers emanating from the southern direction, including the rapidly growing illegal drug-trafficking,’’ he said.

At the summit a protocol, among the other key documents, was signed which approved provisions on the procedure of organising and holding joint anti-terrorist actions.

‘‘This is a serious legal document which will make it possible to resolve many issues in the legal field,’’ head of the CIS Anti-terrorist Centre Boris Mylnikov said. ‘‘The matter concerns even the deployment of paramilitary units in the CIS countries during joint operations,’’ he said.

The summit involving the leaders of the 12 ex-Soviet republics, also discussed the possible US attack on Iraq, with the purpose of hammering out a common position on the Iraqi crisis.
