CHENNAI, OCT 4: Poised to enter the Guinnesss Book of world records, 26-year-old Sundeep Kumar may well be a champion swimmer for the country in future.

The Chennai boy created a world endurance record by swimming continuously for 30 hours in the 50-metre Olympic standard pool two days ago. The feat has already been entered in the Limca Book of records while the Guinnesss Book entry will be made next year, according to Underwater Federation of India with whose auspices, Sundeep performed the feat.

This is a new category in both the Guinnesss and Limca Book of records, his coach Veerabhadran said.

Sundeep, who was felicitated for his feet by the Federation, said he would also be training to emulate another Guinness record feat in 2001 — swimming the maximum number of channels.

He has been invited to train with Ben, the swimmer who had crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 79 days this year. Sundeep has also been invited to join Ben in an endeavour to cross the Pacific Ocean in 2002. He will also be participating in the World long distance championships to be held in Hawaii from November 17-20.

Before signing off temporarily from competitive swimming to concentrate in studies, Sundeep won the individual title in the South Zone swimming championship in 1989, bagging golds in the 100m butterfly, 400m and 1500m freestyle events and the silver in 100m and 50m free-style events.

“I will definitely return to competitive swimming,” he said.
