Chelsea will try to complete a double over West London neighbours Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday to stay in touch with Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Hernan Crespo’s bullet header was all that separated the teams in a pulsating derby in mid-December and the return match is also likely to be close as Chelsea bid to keep up the pressure on Arsenal, who have a nine-point lead at the top.
Chelsea have won six of their last eight league games, dropping points only to Birmingham City in a goalless draw and to Arsenal in a 2-1 defeat, both at Stamford Bridge. That run has taken them above Manchester United into second place.
Fulham, who welcomed back manager Chris Coleman last week after his spell in hospital with a blood infection, will also be keen to pick up at least a point as they bid to finish in the top five to secure a European place next season. Fulham have won only one of their last five league games and have been knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United but they are still just four points behind fourth-placed Charlton Athletic, who occupy the last Champions League spot. However, their Dutch keeper Edwin van der Sar knows there is strong competition for European places from a number of clubs. “There are a lot of teams around with a similar amount of points who are all in with a chance,” he said after last Saturday’s 2-0 home win over struggling Leeds United.
