LONDON, JANUARY 30: English Premiership side Coventry slid out of the FA Cup football tournament after they threw away a 2-0 lead to go down 3-2 at home to Division One promotion hopefuls Charlton in a thrilling fifth round tie.

Charlton manager Alan Curbishley was euphoric. He said: “The first division has acquitted itself very well this year against Premiership clubs in one-off situations like the League Cup and FA Cup."

Sheffield Wednesday will make a premature return to their English Premiership relegation dogfight after crashing out 3-1 at Division two giantkillers Gillingham.

Five-time winners Everton avoided a third upset by seeing off Division Two promotion contenders Preston North End 2-0.

UNITED BACK ON TOP: Middlesborough manager Bryan Robson was left claiming the sending-off of German defender Christian Ziege gifted Manchester United a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford. The German was red-carded for two bookable offences, both for second-half challenges on David Beckham. Beckham went on to seal the points three minutes from time when goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer fumbled, to lift United back to the top of the Premiership.
