CHANDIGARH, Dec 3: Chandigarh Youngsters, Chandigarh beat Punjab Police, Patiala, 5-3 via tie-breaker to lift the trophy in the VK Rana Memorial football tournament which concluded at HMT Sports Complex, Pinjore today.

In a fast-paced match, the Patiala team shot in to the lead through Bawa in the 20th minute of the game. But three minutes from the long hooter, Viney Kanwar, who was awarded the best player of the meet award, sent a neat left footer inside the goal to make it 1-1.

In the extra-time, both Chandigarh Youngsters and Punjab Police were unable to score the golden goal.

In the tie-breaker, Viney Kanwar, Sanjeev, Varinder and Surinder converted for Youngsters while Bawa and Charanjit could net for Patiala.

Earlier, both the semifinals were also decided by tie-breaker.

In the first semifinal, Youg Star defeated Lions Club Ambala 6-3 via tie-breaker. Both the team were locked 2-2 at the end of the regulation period.

Patiala team also made it to the semifinal by beating Kharar XI 5-2 via tie breaker.

Both the teams played 1-1 draw in the stipulated time.

Eight teams took part in the meet.

GNP-36 enter semis
Guru Nanak Public School-36, Sanjay Public School-44, St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School-44 and St Soldier’s International School-28, qualified for the semifinals of the Inter-School football tournament for St Xavier’s Trophy being played at Sector 17 Football Stadium.

In the last league match, GNP-36 lads made short work of St Xavier’s School by handing them a 4-0 drubbing. Though the GNP’s boys dominated the proceeding they had to wait till the first quarter of the contest was over to open their account. Sandeep scored the first goal for GNP-36 in the 20th minute. Thereafter, there was no looking back. Sandeep was again on the target in the 30th minute (2-0).

In the opening five minutes of the second session, Sanbir made it 3-0. Sandeep netted his third and the team’s fourth goal in the 49th minute of the game.

GNP-36 will take on St Soldier’s International School-28, who got a walkover in their last league match, in the semifinal tomorrow.

Sanjay Public School-44 also scored victory over Guru Harkrishan School-40 by a solitary goal to set up a semifinal show down with St Xavier’s School-44.

The match-winner was scored by Vikram in the 10th minute of the second half.

In a in-consequential match St Joseph’s High School-9 and Tribune Model School-29 played a goalless draw.
