A high alert was sounded in the city today in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai on Wednesday. While security was beefed up at strategic locations, patrolling was stepped up in the markets, which witnessed a huge rush today.
“Instructions had been issued to look out for suspicious characters and we are ready to face any eventuality,” said H S Doon, Superintendent of Police (Security).
He added that with security arrangements in place, they are ready to avert any untoward incident.
“Chandigarh is known for its planning and also as the country’s most beautiful city. It is developing at a fast pace and attracts many foreigners every year. It has become a target of miscreants but we are ready to foil any such attempt,” officials at the police department said.
While elaborate security arrangements was made in and around the city hotels, the security personnel at Hotel Taj checked all the vehicles before allowing them entry.
Hotel Mount View, which is a regular haunt of government officers wore a deserted look as they preferred to give it a miss today.
At bus stands and the railway station too, people’s luggage was checked. “We are keeping a close watch on people and have checked the belongings of those who appeared suspicious,” a police officer said. Meanwhile, the police officers have also decided to intensify their night patrolling and have launched search and combing operations in different parts of the city.
The police, meanwhile, have requested the public to inform them if they come across any suspicious person or unattended item. The informer will be suitably awarded. The telephone numbers are: 100, 0172-2749194, 2749874, 2544444.
