Vijay Singh teed off his reign as the new world No.1 in victorious style when he won the Canadian Open on its 100th anniversary on Sunday at the third extra hole of a play-off with home hope Mike Weir.
After Weir drove into thick rough at the long 18th and then landed in a greenside lake with his approach, Singh found the par-five hole’s green comfortably in two to close out his seventh PGA Tour win of the season with a par.
He has now won four of his last five events and last week overtook Tiger Woods as world No.1 after the American had led the rankings for more than five years. Weir was attempting to become the first Canadian since Pat Fletcher in 1954 to win at home.
He had the opportunity to take the event on the 72nd hole but an eight footer for birdie ran a couple of inches past the cup and he had to settle for a one-over 72.
Singh, who had a closing 69, had tied 2003 Masters winner Weir, the overnight leader by three, at nine below par overall after 72 holes.
