The confusion regarding the bye-elections for the five vacant seats of the Goa Assembly was over today as the Election Commission (EC) declared June 2 as the date for the polls. The EC, for the first time, has given only 30 days for the preparation of the polls, while earlier it was 35 days.
The bye-polls are significant for the fact that it is expected end yet another month of President’s rule in the state.
Chief Election Officer of Goa R Yaduvanshi told reporters the code of conduct will come into effect immediately and nominations papers are to be filed between May 9 and 16. Scrutiny will be held on May 17, while the last date for withdrawal of nomination is May 19. Counting will take place on June 5.
The polls were necessitated after five MLAs of the BJP resigned from the party causing the Manohar Parrikar government to topple in February this year. The five seats where the polls are to be held are: Taleigao, Cumbarjua, Margao, Benaulim and Poinguinium. Four of the five BJP MLAs who quit are likely to contest afresh on Congress tickets. The Congress has already announced the candidature of the four members who were involved in bringing down the Parrikar government.
