If named icon, Viru will lead Delhi side
Virender Sehwag, his 8216;icon8217; status still pending, is all set to lead Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League IPL starting in April. IPL8217;s Delhi franchise GMR unveiled the logo and the name of the Twenty20 outfit at a function at the Kotla. 8220;We have requested the IPL Governing Council to grant Sehwag 8216;icon8217; status so that he can lead this side. Though it has not been finalised, he will lead the team if our request is considered,8221; Senior Director of the GMR group B Vanchi said. The team has also roped in Victoria coach Greg Shippard, while TA Sekar, chief coach at the MRF Pace Academy in Chennai, has been appointed to look after its cricket operations.
Clarke, Haddin reject IPL deals
Sydney: Michael Clarke, widely expected to be Australia8217;s next cricket captain, has joined three other Australian players in rejecting contracts for the IPL.
Brad Haddin 8212; Adam Gilchrist8217;s heir apparent as Australia wicketkeeper 8212; and paceman Mitchell Johnson wanted to concentrate on their international careers and former test quick Jason Gillespie was contracted for English county cricket.
Sachin wants Roy for Mumbai team
AS far as selection of players and coaches are concerned, Sachin Tendulkar is believed to be calling the shots in Reliance Industries. The chairman of the group, Mukesh Ambani, had himself called Tendulkar in Australia and asked him to closely follow the developments.
In turn, Tendulkar has asked Reliance to ensure that once the auction window opens on Wednesday morning, they should bid successfully for Pakistani speedster Shoaib Akhtar and Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds.
