Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee asked the Commerce & Industries (C&I) department to expedite the state government’s scheme of setting up a land bank, from which the government will offer land to industrialists willing to set up an industry in Bengal.

Bhattacharjee was on a visit to the new office of the department at Camac Street on Wednesday.

“Setting up this land bank is of prime importance now. We will either buy or acquire land and for this we need to borrow money from commercial banks. Today, we discussed the modalities of this scheme as the CM wanted us to expedite it,” Sabyasachi Sen, Principal Secretary (C&I) said after the meeting with the CM.

The officials also discussed the issue of arranging water for industries in water scarce Bankura and Purulia. Sen said the chief minister asked the department to explore ways for providing water in the area.

“We will ask the Jadavpur University and a Central agency to conduct studies in the area on how to provide water,” he added.

Sen also said the Chinese automobile manufacturing company FAO, which had visited the former Nano project site, has liked the site.
