Kolkata has become the first metropolis of the country to ban jaywalking in the city. Violators will be fined on the spot up to Rs 50.
The decision that was taken in last August will be implemented from the coming Monday, December 8. ‘‘Jaywalking has been causing not only accidents but hindrance to steady movement of traffic,’’ Traffic DCP Piyush Pandey said today. ‘‘The government took this decision on our recommendation,’’ he said.
The decision will be implemented in three phases, according to Pandey. ‘‘We have chosen five busy spots in and around Esplanade in central Kolkata where in the first week we will launch an awareness campaign against the dangers of jaywalking. In the second week, we will start detaining for at least five minutes those who are violating this rule. And in the third week we will start imposing fines that may go up to Rs 50,’’ the police official said.
Police will rope in school children too for the awareness campaign. ‘‘We will take the help of school children to spread the campaign,’’ he said.
