In what may turn out to be the cheapest cellular service for the consumers, prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee launched the much-awaited country’s first nationwide cellular service of the government owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

Vajpayee described it as one of the greatest achievements of this government as it had brought the people more closer. Vajpayee made the inaugural call on the BSNL mobile to deputy prime minister L K Advani in New Delhi.

Later, chairman and managing director of the BSNL Prithipal Singh, announcing the tariff plans for post paid and pre-paid cellular service, claimed that BSNL was using the GSM technology, the most popular digital cellular service having features like intelligent network, billing and customer care and unified messaging service.

It would cover all states except Mumbai, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and North East and Assam and can cover upto four million customer base. It would provide all India roaming including Mumbai and Delhi and by March 2003, almost all areas under BSNL are likely to be covered except Jammu and Kashmir and North East.

Singh said there would be a registration fee of only Rs 500 and the activation charge Rs 200, the “lowest” in the country. There would be no roaming charge, no charge for calling line identification service.
