Jammu, May 28: A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was killed when Pakistani rangers fired indiscriminately at Indian positions along the international border in RS Pura sub-sector of Jammu frontier early today, official sources said.

The Pakistani rangers resorted to firing from medium range weaponry without any provocation at more than 22 border outposts (BoPs) and civilian areas in R S Pura, Samba and Hiranagar sub-sectors of Jammu-Kathua sector since last night, the sources told PTI here.

Those BoPs which came under fire include Djabowal, Gharana, Nawa-Pindi, Aik Nallah, Pindi, Pittal, Nikowal, Sia, S H Way, S M Pura, Fagwari, Chak Faquira, Zero Point, Mehta Post, Chambiliyal Nanga, Jugnoo Chak, Nariyanpur, Londi, Abdullian, Mangral and Sangral.

At Nawalpindi BoP, BSF Lance Naik, Kokngang Singhmonitoring situation received a volley of bullets fired from across and died on the spot early this morning, the sources said.

BSF jawans also retaliated. In the exchange of fire which continued till this afternoon, there was no report of any casualty, they said.

This is first incident after the IG level meeting between BSF and Pakistani Rangers at Jallundher in which both sides had agreed to stop unprovoked firing along the international border.

Indian and Pakistani troops traded firing and shelling in several areas along line of control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, the sources said.

The areas included Pallanwala, Akhnoor Forward (Jammu sector), Noushera, Bhawani, Laam (Rajouri sector), Mendhar, Kerni, Krishna Gati, Balakote (Poonch sector), Thang, central Siachen (Kargil sector) Uri, Machial and Kerna (Baramulla-Kupwara sector) since last night.

Pakistani troops resorted to intense shelling in central Siachen, Krishna Gati and Bhawani sectors, while other areas witnessed low intensity firing till early today, the sources said, adding there was no loss of life or property.

An official spokesman at Srinagar said after a brief lull, Pakistani troops today opened fire at forward Indian positions along the line of control (LoC) in Keran and Karnah sectors of Kupwara district in North Kashmir.

The artillery and mortar shelling from across the border began this morning forcing the Indian troops to retaliate. There was no report of any casualty or damage to property, the spokesman said.
