Housewife kills self

A 23-year-old woman hung herself to death in Kurla west on Wednesday night allegedly because she was being tortured for dowry. Police have arrested three family members, including the husband, and charged them of murder.

According to the Saki Naka police, Sangita Rawte committed suicide after severe mental and physical torture by her husband, Anil 29. The victim8217;s mother-in-law Shantibai 50 and her husband Shamrao 50 have also been named in the First Information Report.

Sangita married Anil last August, and began to be harassed after she failed to cough up Rs 1 lakh. By November, her husband and his parents began bashing her up and torturing her regulary, said the police. On Wednesday night, Sangita hung herself from the ceiling at around 9.30 pm in her residence at Arun Kumar Compound, near Kaju Pada Pipe Line, Kurla. A suicide note was recovered from the spot, but its contents are not known.

One held for fraud in Andheri

The crime branch of the Mumbaipolice arrested one person on charges of fraud and threatening a Singapore-based company on Thursday.

R S Agarwal masquerading as a representative of Bharat Galvanised Ltd placed an import order with the Singapore-based Nazi Consignment on January 5, 1999 for 286 metric tonnes of zinc. Following receipt of Agarwal8217;s order, Nazi Consignment sent the zinc consignment by the vessel MV Express Panama while documents related to the transaction were processed through ABM Agro Bank in Singapore.

Subsequently, Agarwal sent two fax messages to Nazi Consignment asking them to send all documents through his banker IFB Ltd Overseas Dept with its office at J B Road, Andheri E.

However, later the consignors found that IFB Ltd did not exist nor did Bharat Galvanised Ltd. The Singapore company rushed their representative Gopal Krishna Pahadia, who found that the deal was also bogus. He promptly lodged a police complaint.

Meanwhile, Agarwal contacted Nazi executive Pol Healing who was threatened with death if hefails to deposit 70,000 in a bank in Dubai.

The crime branch sleuths swung into action and nabbed Agarwal, whose real name was Manish Rishi Ambarish. The swindler was remanded to police custody till February 14.

Woman8217;s body found at Vikhroli

The Vikhroli police recovered the body of a 45-year-old woman near Godrej Company along the Eastern Express Highway at Vikhroli E on Wednesday night. The body had scars on the neck, and police suspect that the victim was stabbed with a sharp weapon. The body has been sent for post mortem, and police have registered a case of murder.

A Rajkot Sessions Court has stayed the release of director Vinay Shukla8217;s Godmother, starring Shabana Azmi, Milind Gunaji and Nirmal Pandey, which was to be due for release on February 19. According to the petitioner Santokben Jadeja, the film is based on her life and portrays her in a bad light.

The film is the story of an illiterate village woman who is pushed intopolitics by circumstances. Producer Rajat Sengupta of Gramco Films told Express Newsline that the story of the film has nothing to do with the life of Jadeja. The film8217;s director added that he had drawn inspiration for the plot from Kishen Chander8217;s novel Dhangon Ki Rani and a woman Jina Masi from Bhendi Bazar in Mumbai.
