Four persons were killed, a major breach occurred in SYL and Narwana canals and Ghaggar and Tangri rivers in Punjab while a red alert was sounded in Himachal Pradesh following fears of flash flood in Sutlej river as heavy rains lashed most parts of North India for the third consecutive day on Tuesday playing havoc with road, rail and Air traffic.

The services of Army had been requisitioned following the breaches at these places, official sources said.

The SYL canal breached at two places — Rajpura and Alampur villages — following which some factories located in Shambu are of the district were inundated, the sources said, the breach was of large size and was unlikely to be plugged immediately.

Two children, a boy and a girl, were killed as the roof of their house collapsed in Chandigarh’s Kumhar Colony due to heavy downpour while a teenaged boy died in rain-related incident at Bapu Dham Colony here, police said.

According to the Meteorological Department, Chandigarh had received a record rainfall of over 300mm in the last 36 hours.

Two columns of Army were requistioned along with 10 boats to rescue residents of villages including Barwala, Natwal and Rajiv Vihar of Panchkula district in Haryana who were marooned as also those living along the Ghaggar river which was in spate.
