When Pavan Ramchandra Kurhade, the four-year-old son of a labourer living at Bhosari’s Balajinagar slum, saw some boys hiding stolen hardware little did he realise it would cost him his life.
The boys, who had stolen the hardware from a local shop, feared Pavan might blow the whistle on them and decided to strangle him to make sure he did not tell anybody. They also cut a vein in his hand just to make sure he was dead.
The murder, which took place on June 23, came to light yesterday when Pavan’s mother lodged a complaint at Bhosari police station against the five boys who allegedly killed her son.
The police have rounded up four boys who have since been sent to an observation centre and are looking out for the other. Three of them are 11-year-olds; the fourth is 12. Two are school drop-outs and the others study in Class 5.
The boys had tried to sell the hardware to a scrap dealer but the dealer refused. The boys then hid the hardware near the slum but realised that Pavan had spotted them. They took him to a secluded spot in Bhosari MIDC, strangled him and used a blade to cut a vein.
Pavan’s parents reported him missing three days later on June 26. The next day police found Pavan’s body. Pavan’s parents stumbled on the boys’ involvement after speaking to slum dwellers and lodged an FIR.
