If at all the South Africans were looking to gain any psychological advantage in their battle against India, the Sourav Ganguly controversy that surrounded the Kolkata one-dayer has given them their best opportunity so far in the five-match series.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Mark Boucher reminded India of the Ganguly banter in the last match that left captain Rahul Dravid and coach Greg Chappell livid. Boucher soon dismissed the talk of pitch and weather conditions and decided to extend his views on how the South Africans ‘‘found it strange that he (Ganguly) has not been included in this Indian team.’’
In an attempt to add salt to the injury, Boucher went on to say that ‘‘the South Africans preferred to bowl to this new look Indian team and not Ganguly,’’ who in his view has been a remarkable one-day batsman. Boucher did not mince words in mentioning that the South Africans had found a loophole in this Indian unit and they would be leaving no opportunity in reminding it to the Indians time and again.
‘‘I think controversy in the Indian team will be an advantage for us. Whenever a side’s losing there will be cracks that will open up and the big crack of Ganguly has opened up.
‘‘I think it did not really open up when Sri Lanka was here because such things don’t come out in the open when a team is winning. We have put India under pressure and the Sourav Ganguly issue has reared its head. Believe me, we will use it to our advantage,’’ Boucher said.
