CHANDIGARH, April 14: The 108th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar was celebrated with enthusiasm in the city today. At a function organised by Dr. Ambedkar Study Circle at the Ambedkar Bhawan, Sector 37, a booklet titled, 8220;Dr. Ambedkar Jeevan Darshan Saransh8221; was released by Jagdish Sagar, adviser to the U.T. Administrator. It gives a brief life sketch of Ambedkar.
Ambedkar8217;s contribution as the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly which drafted the Constitution of India, and as an educationist was lauded by Dr. Sodhi Ram, Controller of Examinations, Punjab University, Chandigarh. He said Ambedkar helped in the upliftment of the downtrodden people of the society.
The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Welfare Federation celebrated the birthday of this Bharat Ratna winner at the Valmiki Bhawan in Sector 24. President of the federation Amar Nath Sarhadi, asked the people to follow the path shown by Baba Saheb8217;.
The Rashtriya Valmiki Dharam Samaj Ravadhas organised a cycle rally and presented a memorandum of their demands to Punjab Governor Lt.Gen.B.K.N. Chhibber.
The Bhim Rao Welfare Society of the Maloya Colony took out a procession from the Colony and joined the celebrations at the Dr. Ambedkar Bhawan. Ambedkar8217;s birthday was also celebrated by the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee at the Congress Bhawan. Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Pardesh Valmiki Sabha CPVS condemned the U.T. Administration for its discriminatory attitude towards the Valmiki Samaj.
In a joint press release issued by CPVS general secretaries B.R.Tisawarh, Swaraj Kumar Hamdard, it was stated that no member from the Valmiki organisations was allowed to pay their respect to Dr. Ambedkar. They alleged that more than one hundred members of the Valmiki Samaj left the venue of celebrations in protest against the attitude of the administration. Balraj Singh, the Chairman of the SC/ST cell, Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee CTCC urged the administration to abolish the condition of providing proof of residence for obtaining scheduled caste certificates.
