NEW DELHI, OCT 29: Despite the whipping it received in Parliament on the Bofors issue, the Congress has decided to persist with its protest against the inclusion of Rajiv Gandhi’s name in the Bofors chargesheet.

Describing the chargesheet as a “political witch-hunt”, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today urged her party MPs to take to the streets to mobilise public opinion against the “political vendetta being pursued by the BJP Government”. Sonia asked the MPs to study carefully the arguments put forward by the party in the House so that the issue could be explained to the people in “proper perspective”. She said State units have been instructed to work out an agitational programme to expose “the shameful game of the BJP Government”.

Admitting that there was demoralisation in the ranks, Sonia urged the MPs not to be discouraged by the party’s performance in the elections. “The Congress has always shown its mettle in the hour of crisis. I have no doubt that this time too, we will convertadversity into opportunity,” she declared.

She also announced that the Training Department of the AICC would organise a training programme for newly elected MPs in the next session to help them discharge their duties effectively.

Meanwhile, Home Minister L K Advani tonight hinted in the Lok Sabha at the Government taking a second look at the inclusion of Rajiv Gandhi’s name in the Bofors payoffs case chargesheet in the wake of a strong demand by Congress that his name be deleted. "The Government will take into account what the leader of the Opposition Sonia Gandhi and Congress member Mani Shankar Aiyer said on this issue and do what is appropriate," he said.
