The BJP on Thursday said it would not allow the demolition of Ram Sethu for the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal project (SSCP) as it amounted to “cultural terrorism” and asserted that the multi-crore project would be implemented with a realigned route if voted to power.
“The BJP, if voted to power, will review the project and implement it with an alternate route. We will not give up the project,” BJP president Rajnath Singh told reporters in Chennai.
He termed the demolition of Ram Sethu as “cultural terrorism,” saying that it targets the cultural beliefs and icons of the majority community in the country.
“The ludicrous submissions made by the UPA government that Lord Ram himself had demolished Ram Sethu amounts to playing with the sentiments of Hindus and should be highly condemned.” Ram Sethu should be declared a national monument and if the rules did not permit it, they should be amended, he said.
He also said more political parties would be included in the NDA for the 2009 Lok Sabha polls. It would be a pre-poll alliance in some cases and post poll in many cases, he said.
On the party’s strategy for Tamil Nadu and whether it would have an alliance with the AIADMK, he said “our options are open. We have a lot of friends.” However, he declined to elaborate.
On the UPA government winning the trust vote in the Lok Sabha, he said the manner in which it had won had made the common man lose faith in the government.
