Expressing apprehensions of booth-capturing in Bihar and Haryana during the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP today demanded that para-military forces be deployed in the two states. A BJP delegation, led by general secretary Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, met the Election Commission today to make the demand.

Naqvi later told reporters that they had demanded that para-military forces be deployed at all polling booths in Bihar as they feared that supporters of the ruling RJD would resort to rigging and booth-capturing. Union Textile Minister Shahnawaz Hussain and Minister of State for Civil Aviation Rajiv Pratap Rudy — who are contesting from Kishenganj and Chapra constituencies in Bihar, respectively — have already asked the Home Ministry to deploy Central forces in their areas.

The BJP also sought the transfer of the district magistrates and police chiefs of Agra and Mainpuri districts of Uttar Pradesh and Bhiwani, Hisar and Sirsa districts of Haryana to facilitate free and fair polls. Naqvi alleged that, ‘‘Officers in the three Haryana districts are working as agents of the ruling Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).’’

Mainpuri is sensitive because of the candidature of UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav from there. In Bhiwani, the sons of three key Haryana politicians — Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala (Ajay Chautala), Haryana Vikas Party chief Bansi Lal (Surinder Singh) and state Congress chief Bhajan Lal (Kuldeep Bishnoi) — are in the fray. Sirsa happens to be Chautala’s home-district.

The BJP delegation called upon the EC to take note of the Hardwar developments. Naqvi said, ‘‘It is amazing that the Congress which otherwise tends to make a mountain of a molehill, is shamelessly quiet on Hardwar incident.’’ They said that the party would send a team of three leaders, including Rajya Sabha member Balbir Punj and Delhi leader Arati Mehra, to Hardwar for an on-the-spot study of the situation.

The BJP delegation also lodged a complaint against the Samjwadi Party, citing an advertisement, which, in its view, sought votes from the Muslims in the name of Allah. ‘‘This,’’ according to Naqvi, ‘‘is aimed at creating a sense of terror in the minds of Muslims.”
