The BJP today reverted to the Telgi scam to try balancing the expected Opposition attack on the NDA Government over the milking of PSUs and the Dilip Singh Judeo VCD issues in Parliament.

Since the party did not want it known that it was indeed so, the BJP deviated from its usual practice of fielding Parliamentary Party secretary V.K. Malhotra to renew its attack on the Congress over the Telgi issue. It was general secretary Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi who called upon the Congress to ask its governments in Maharashtra and Karnataka ‘‘to refer the Telgi case to the Centre for investigation’’.

House: First day, no show

Naqvi said: ‘‘Let them refer the case to the Centre, which can decide on the agency to probe into it.’’ As for the reason, he contended: ‘‘The conduct of the two governments is irresponsible. They are treating the fake stamp paper racket as a minor crime.’’

He said: ‘‘The recovery of large quantities of foreign and Indian currency notes in Nashik now only reinforces larger ramifications of the Telgi scam. We suspect that the racket has deep roots and is linked to anti-national elements. ’’

Naqvi also ruled out early Lok Sabha elections, but left scope for a change in the position. In reply to a question, he said: ‘‘Whatever the outcome of Assembly polls in four states, Lok Sabha elections will be held on time. I see no possibility of early elections as of now.’’ Qualified by ‘‘as of now’’, it leaves scope for subsequent review of the stand.
