Rupee declines to 43.04

MUMBAI: The rupee went to an intra-day low of 43.02/04 on Monday. Opening the day at 42.9450/9550 from its last close at 42.93/94, the rupee touched an intra-day low of 42.9450/9550 on a statement by Reserve Bank deputy governor, Jagdish Kapoor, to the effect that the central bank will let the local currency find its own level. The State Bank of India8217;s dollar buying in early trades coupled with tension on the Indo-Pak border pulled the rupee to its intra-day low. By close of trades, the rupee was seen at 42.97/98.

RBI deputy governor Jagdish Capoor said that although the rupee recently weakened on foreign exchange markets, quot;I don8217;t see any sustained pressure on the rupeequot;. Asked to elaborate, he added: quot;The only reason for the recent pressure has seen some sort of problem at the borders.quot;

AIBA threatens country-wide strike

NEW DELHI: All India Bank Staff Association said it will go in for a country-wide strike if the government implemented the recommendations of MS Verma committee on revival of three loss making PSU banks. Taking strong exception of the recommendations, which proposed closure of 25 per cent of branches of the loss making Uco bank, United Bank of India and Indian Bank, AIBA officials said it will oppose the proposals from implementation by the government.
