JAMSHEDPUR, February 8: Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin stirred a hornet’s nest here by allegedly making a `derogatory’ remark against `Biharis’ whom he reportedly called “thieves”.

“Sub Bihari chor hein nah?” were the words attributed to the Indian skipper in the local media.

He was reported to have uttered these words at the end of the second day’s play in the Ranji Trophy Super League match between Hyderabad and hosts Bihar on Friday.

The local media carried the report in Saturday’s editions. One paper even published the story on front page. According to eyewitnesses, Azhar had passed the remarks before a big gathering after a batting stint at the nets on Friday.

Azhar’s public outburst followed the theft of his cap as he was returning to pavilion with his bat under one arm and a yellow cap under the other, when he was mobbed by a group of autograph hunters. While obliging them, he suddenly found his cap missing. Azhar immediately called the Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) officialsand threatened not to take field the following day (Saturday) if the cap was not immediately found. The BCA officials and the police swung into action and the cap was finally restored to the Indian captain at about 8 pm.

The person carrying the cap was reportedly caught while displaying it to his friends on the street, claiming it was a gift for him from the Indian captain.
