PUNE, Jan 1: The Pune Municipal Corporation will soon initiate the construction of 60 feet road from Paud Phata hill to Balbharati to lessen the traffic burden on Karve Road.

Civic officials said Municipal Commissioner Rajiv Agarwal is expected to make the provision of Rs one crore as against the estimated cost of Rs 3.91 crore. The PMC would acquire the land of Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Indian Law Society and a cooperative housing society to complete the road. All the three parties had agreed to surrender their land, the officials said.

The PMC had to give up the plan to construct the road following stiff opposition from the environmentalists about 18 years back. The environmentalists had argued that several trees would be chopped in the process. The civic officials do not anticipate opposition to the road this time since it would run along foothill and "not a single tree would have to be felled to complete the road”.
