Bhaichung Bhutia struck in his debut match for MK Land but could not prevent a 2-3 loss to MPPJ.
This is his second year in Malaysia; he had earlier played for Perak FC in 2003.
Bhutia, who will be playing as a ‘flying striker’ for MK Land, tapped the ball in from close. The goal might have earned kudos from caretaker-coach Michael Palani, but the coach was critical of his fitness.
“He needs to buck up with his match-fitness and I hope he gets it before the Malaysia Cup that kicks off on Saturday,” Palani told The Indian Express.
He suggested the excessive heat could have a lot to do with Bhutia looking short of match-fit. “We’ve got another game on Wednesday against a local side PKNS. He needs some time,” Palani said.
The match, one of the two friendlies MK Land are scheduled to play as their tournament build-up, saw Bhutia play the entire 90-minute duration.
