GUWAHATI, July 22: Former State home minister Bhrigu Kumar Phukan, who has been suspended from the primary membership of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), today indicated that he may have no option but to form a new political party.
However, he added, if the split came about, Chief Minister and party president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and his coterie would have none to blame but themselves.
Phukan said this in an interview from Shillong, where he has been holed up since the AGP announced the action against him on Sunday night for his “anti-party activities”.
“Those who have thrown me out of the AGP following my pointing out certain basic issues concerning our party and government will regret soon for their illegal and unconstitutional decision,” Phukan said.
Several senior leaders of the AGP, however, have ruled out chances of a split in the party. At the same time, they made it clear that there was no move yet to withdraw the punitive action against Phukan.
The former home minister also challenged the claim of a senior minister in the Mahanta Government that he (Phukan) had only a handful of supporters with him.
