HOSHIARPUR, May 25: Former Chief Minister and president of Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee Rajinder Kaur Bhattal has said none of the reliefs announced by the Badal government have reached the people of Punjab and the government was playing with the sentiments of Punjabis. Addressing an election rally at Sham Churasi, Bhattal said that none of the promises, made by the Akali-BJP government had been fulfilled so far.

Bhattal alleged that people awaited pensions, which the Badal government had raised from Rs 200 to Rs 500, but instead of pension cheques electricity bills were slapped on them. She said no free electricity or water existed.

Reacting to the statements of the Chief Minister and Finance Minister, Punjab that Congress left the treasury empty, she said that if there was no money left in the treasury then how was the government spending.

She said that Akalis did not even know how to spend. She said in 15 months, it could not prepare the budget. She alleged that Akalis were misinforming the people about waiving off of 8,500 crore rupee loan and said that only Rs 1,200 crore had been waived off, that too due to the efforts of late Beant Singh.

Meera Kumar, general secretary, All India Congress Committee, questioned the Akalis where were they hiding when Punjab was burning during the days of militancy. She blamed the Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Kanshi Ram for promoting casteism and misleading dalits.

Today’s rally was addressed among others by Punjab Pardesh Mahila Congress president Malti Thapar, former minister Kewal Krishan, Ramesh Dogra, Naresh Thakur, Surjit Kaur Kalkat, Shamsher Singh Dulo and Congress nominee from Sham Churasi, Santosh Chowdhary.

Later Bhattal and other leaders addressed a similar rally at Dawida Rihana.
