IT Major Wipro will send a team to Madhya Pradesh to assess infrastructure facilities in the state before taking a decision to expand the company’s operations there, Chief Minister Uma Bharti said today.
‘‘(Wipro chairman Azim) Premji assured us of sending a team, which would assess the situation there before taking a decision,’’ Bharti said after an hour-long meeting at Wipro’s headquarters on the outskirts of the city.
‘‘As soon as I heard that Wipro plans to expand beyond Bangalore, we thought why not showcase Bhopal and Indore and invite them to set up operations there,’’ she said.
Premji last month cited infrastructure problem as one of the reasons to put a halt for expansion in Bangalore, its home base, and look to other regions for growth. The Wipro Chief’s remarks followed similar statements from other IT firms which forced Karnataka Chief Minister Dharam Singh to meet IT industry leaders, including Premji, to assure that the infrastructure issues would be sorted out.
Bharti, besides offering ‘‘unlimited’’ land and good infrastructure for IT firms, said, Indore and Bhopal had IT parks with state-of-the-art facilities. The Chief Minister also discussed with Premji how to expand access to education in every district of the state.
