Tamil film director Bharatiraja today toned down his rhetoric against DMK president M. Karunanidhi and Rajnikant, saying he appreciated the actor’s sentiments behind the fast on Sunday.

Bharatiraja, who had criticised Rajnikant for not attending the film fraternity’s protest against Karnataka’s refusal to follow the Supreme Court on Cauvery, said: ‘‘Rajni is my good friend and will continue to be. But if he had come to Neyveli, I would have definitely garlanded him during his fasting.’’

The director had recently accused Karunanidhi of ‘‘petty politics’’. Though he denied ever attacking the DMK chief today, the party was not convinced. Former minister and DMK leader K. Ponmudi said the director should have immediately refuted the remarks attributed to him about Karunanidhi if he had not made them.

Bharatiraja said his Neyveli mission had been accomplished as everyone now knew about the Cauvery issue and the violation of the Supreme Court’s orders by Karnataka. He said the Tamil film industry will continue its agitation for the release of water but the plan was undecided as there were differences between the parties involved.
