The release of Raja Bhaiyya from jail seems to have become the bone of contention between the Congress and its new ally, the Samajwadi Party.

The Congress has been watching with apprehension the increasing softening of the BJP towards UP Chief Minister and SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in the last few days. Even though the BJP voted against Yadav during the trust vote, the Congress’ fears persist.

Congress leaders say that with one move, the Uttar Pradesh government’s image in people’s perception has tilted heavily against the Dalits and weaker sections. This feeling was said to have been communicated to Yadav in his recent meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi. The pressure from the Congress is also being cited as one of the reasons for Yadav’s statement today disowning his involvement in the case and blaming it on officials.
