Belgaum City was rocked by fresh violence on Monday after yesterday’s communal riots. Clashes were reported in new areas but no untoward incidents were reported from areas where riots had broken out on Sunday.

Though prohibitory orders clamped on the city have been extended for another 24 hours, members of the two communities pelted stones at each other as well as shops and passing vehicles. Today’s violence engulfed the railway station area, Mujawar Galli, Tilak Chowk, Bandur Galli, Patil Galli and Tahasildar Galli.

The situation in the areas under the Market police station limits that were hit by riots on Sunday has been described as ‘‘tense but under control’’. All shops here remained shut for the day. As a precaution, police stopped people from entering these localities after late evening.

Police also rounded up 45 people for setting ablaze shops and vehicles on Monday evening.
