Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former prime minister A.B. Vajpayee, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani were among the country’s top leaders who greeted DMK president M. Karunanidhi on his 81st birthday today.
Since he celebrated his birthday after three years, the first time since he lost CM’s post in 2001, there was all round happiness among the party cadre and functionaries. The recent victory of the DPA in Tamil Nadu was another reason for the party to increase the level of celebrations.
Manmohan Singh, besides greeting him over phone, sent a message saying Karunanidhi’s ‘‘political journey has indeed largely shaped the destiny of the state from its nascent days.’’
At a rally organised to felicitate him, Karunanidhi brought up the Cauvery water issue and asked the Prime Minister and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to prevail over the Karnataka government to abide by the law to release water to Tamil Nadu. ‘‘…we want farmers of both the states to co-exist,’’ he said.
Vajpayee, in his message, wished Karunanidhi many more years in the service of the nation.
Protem Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, actor Rajnikant, CPI national secretary D. Raja, BJP national secretary L. Ganesan also greeted Karunanidhi. Former PM V.P. Singh, Home Minister Shivraj Patil, PMK founder S. Ramadoss, TNCC president G.K. Vasan, MDMK general secretary Vaiko and IUML state president Khader Moideen, among others greeted him personally.
