Sept 11: Kapil Dev has been asked to take charge of the Indian team’s coaching camp at Chennai from September 14-23, which puts to an end the suspense over whether he would continue to be the national team’s coach for the ICC Knock-out tournament in Nairobi.

The Indian team coach this evening confirmed that he had received a letter from the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Jaywant Lele, asking him “to proceed to Chennai and take charge of the camp”.

“My office has received the letter from the Board although I have not seen it so far,” Kapil confirmed when asked for his reactions to the Board’s latest decision seeking the National coach’s assistance for the camp.

“If they want me for the camp, I am always available. Can there be any doubt about that?” he asked. “Yes, surely I’ll be going to Chennai and take charge of the camp,” he emphasised.

The Board’s asking Kapil Dev to take charge of the camp and the legendary cricketer’s decision to attend the camp has thus put an end speculation about Kapil’s continuance as the national coach, at least for the Nairobi tourney.

Board President A C Muthiah had yesterday given a hint to this effect when he said that Kapil might be invited to train the probables. The Board chief had been authorised by the working committee at Bangalore on August 20 to take an appropriate decision regarding Kapil Dev in the wake of the decision to drop Mohammed Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja and Nikhil Chopra from the list of probables.

The National selectors will meet in Chennai on September 20 to pick the 14-member squad, to be led by Saurav Ganguly, for the Nairobi tournament.
