RASHT, IRAN, May 20: Tejas Bakre8217;s dream of earning a Grandmaster norm was shattered as the Indian crashed to his first defeat in the Asian Junior Chess Championship here today. And yet he won the title and also became India8217;s 22nd International Master.

Bakre and Ibrahi Khamrukalov of Uzbekistan tied for first place with eight points each but on progressive score the Indian pushed Khamrukalov to the second place. Amir Bhagheri of Iran, who defeated Bakre in the last round today had nothing to fight except giving a helping hand to his colleague Amir Mallahi who had a chance to catch up with Bakre and get his IM title. But Mallahi agreed for a quick draw with teammate Ghaem Maghami in 18 moves of Sicilian Alapin to blow away his chances.

Dao Thien Hai of Vietnam, the top seed finished third on tie-break after recording a 38-move win over India8217;s R Karthik in the final round. Karthik with five points, just about managed to get into the prize list coming 10th.

VIJI SECOND, PALLAVI THIRD: Nguyen Thiof Vietnam won the girls title outright and earned her maiden Women8217;s Grandmaster norm when she defeated Kashatovrian of Iran in 26 moves of Petroff Defence. Nguyen8217;s GM norm was confirmed only after Vijayalakshmi Subburaman of India conceded a draw on the second board to S Navabi of Iran in 47 moves of an English Opening.

Nguyen was on nine points, half-a-point ahead of Vijayalakshmi. India8217;s Pallavi Shah surged to take the bronze with eight points after defeating M Mahini of Iran.
