Port of Spain, March 6: Last-wicket pair Jason Gillespie and Glenn McGrath frustrated West Indies with a stand of 66 to boost Australia to 269 all out in the first Test today.

Mcgrath, who hit his highest Test score of 39, and Gillespie, who equalled his Test best of 28 not out, shared the biggest partnership of the innings after joining forces at 203 for nine on the second morning.

The 10th wicket pair’s mixture of solid defence, resourceful attacking strokes and a measure of good fortune thwarted West Indies’ efforts to wrap up the first innings on a slow Queens Park Oval pitch.

The first part of the morning session had belonged to West Indies, who looked set to polish off the Australians swiftly after they resumed at the overnight 174 for six.

Curtly Ambrose, who did not take a wicket on the opening day despite an outstanding piece of bowling, seized three wickets, including two with consecutive deliveries.

Australia suffered their first setback when Ambrose had Shane Warne (21) caught by SherwinCampbell in the gully off a long hop.

Ambrose struck his double blow by having Greg Blewett lbw, playing slightly across a straight one, and bowling Stuart MacGill with the next delivery. Blewett was Australia’s top scorer with 58.

Australia then wrested the initiative from the West Indies under the influence of Gillespie and McGrath, who beat his previous Test best of 24.
